Start Putts on Line: The String-Line Drill

Short · 0:41 watch time

Use an elevated string as a visual reference for your starting line.

Take it to practice.

Find a short, straight putt on the practice green—this example uses seven feet. Put one support behind the ball and the other beyond the hole. Stretch a string above your intended line, with enough clearance for the ball and putter to move freely.

Place the ball under the string, aim the putter face square to the line and make your normal stroke. Watch the ball’s initial direction. Try a few with the string, then remove the aid and repeat the same putt.

Adapt to your ability, the space and the conditions. Demonstrations are illustrative. Watch the full lesson and its YouTube description for context and references.
